Mechanical Design Engineer

The mechanical design engineer will design, build, and test the mechanical systems in prototype experimental aircraft in a fast-paced research and development environment. The work will span preliminary design, critical design, system design, manufacturing and assembly support, and flight test engineering, focusing on the mechanical portions of those phases. Typically, this work includes but is not limited to flight controls, electro-mechanical actuation systems, landing gear, fittings and their integration into the overall vehicle.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptual design, structural layout, sizing, and detail design
  • Generation of fabrication and assembly definition
  • Structural analysis
  • Manufacturing and assembly support
  • Supporting ground and flight test planning, test execution, and aircraft modifications
  • Simultaneous work on multiple projects

Required Qualifications / Skills:

  • Masters of science in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or substantial equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years related work experience
  • Strong understanding of the theory and practical application of mechanical systems, structure, and performance
  • Understanding of the basics of composite construction and assembly
  • Strong problem solving, organizational, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD
  • Ability to work in multiple engineering disciplines on an aggressive schedule
  • Masters of science in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering
  • Aircraft homebuilding experience or other hands-on design or build experience
  • Basic understanding of electrical design fundamentals

Desired Qualifications / Skills:

  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink, Labview
  • Proficiency in CATIA v5
  • Rapid prototyping experience
  • Pilot’s license
